5 Common Boiler Problems Made Easier With These Troubleshooting Tips

heat your home with a boiler, chances are you know it’s a complicated piece of equipment and a lot can go wrong. Understanding how a boiler works can take some of the stress away when you encounter problems with your equipment.

Troubleshooting Basics

  1. If the boiler isn’t heating, check the power supply first. Determine if the electricity is on if it’s an electric boiler, or if the gas supply is on if it’s gas-powered. If your boiler is powered by oil, check your oil supply by reading the gauge.
  2. Is the thermostat control set to the “on” setting? Be sure to set the thermostat higher than the room temperature so it will come on.
  3. Is it possible the thermostat is worn out? They don’t last forever, and if yours is faulty, it may be misreading temperature settings and turning on the heat at the wrong setting. It may be worthwhile to clean and re-calibrate yours, but newer thermostats are more accurate and can save you money.
  4. Do you have a pilot light? It may be out, and you may be able to relight it if you’re familiar with the process. If you don’t have a pilot light, you may have a de-blocking button. Press it. If that doesn’t work, check the manufacturer’s recommendations for central heating pressure. If your equipment’s setting is correct, and you still can’t get it to work, you may need to summon an HVAC specialist.
  5. In extremely cold weather, condensation may freeze in the condensate pipe and block it. Besides a fault code or warning light, you may be notified of this by gurgling sounds from the boiler.
