Air Conditioner Problems

Put Air Conditioner Problems to Bed With These Troubleshooting Tips

Sooner or later, you’re bound to encounter some type of problem with your air conditioner. The good news is that many issues can be resolved before you have to call for repairs. Learning about air conditioner troubleshooting will put you a step ahead of common problems, and you may be able to manage some of them on your own.

Power Not On

AC techs are often called to a home for repairs only to find the air conditioner isn’t on. Check if the air conditioner is set to “on” or “auto.” The thermostat should be set a few degrees below the temperature of the room. Check the main electrical panel for a tripped switch or blown fuse. Also check the power switch to the condenser/compressor. If you suspect the thermostat isn’t working properly, turn off the power, remove the panel and unscrew the Y terminal wire. Hold the wire by its insulation and touch the bare end to the R terminal, holding it for two minutes. If the compressor kicks on, the thermostat is most likely faulty and should be replaced.

System Isn’t Cooling

Failure to cool can be caused by several things. See if the thermostat is set properly. If you suspect the air conditioner needs a refrigerant charge, call your HVAC sevice company. Otherwise, check the condenser coil in the outdoor unit. A dirty condenser may impede the system’s ability to cool. Make sure there are no weeds or other debris around the condenser unit.

No Airflow From Registers

See if the outside fan is running. If not, check the breakers, the thermostat and the air handler control, or wires between the thermostat and the air handler. Dirty coils, a dirty filter or a malfunctioning blower may halt airflow and cause the system to freeze.
